- Video in the Medical Practice

Questions Asked

•  Digital Doctors: How is the device, access and media profile of physicians evolving?
•  Mobility: How are smart devices shaping clinical workflow?
•  Content Discovery:
Which online medical resources are most influential and how are physicians finding them?
•  Patient Care:
How are doctors using the Internet during the consult, and afterwards to extend care?
•  New Practice Order: How are electronic health records, electronic prescribing and practice websites impacting the practice?

The Manhattan Research Study “Taking the Pulse” published on 5/16/2011 surveyed 2,000 physicians to understand digital adoption trends. The study focused on how the doctors are using technology in their practice, in electronic health records, e-prescribing or daily interactions with patients.

As video chat has become more affordable, this type of communication is emerging as a best in class for physicians to consult with patients about non-urgent health concerns. An example would be follow up questions from an office visit or to connect with patients dispersed in Fairfield County, Connecticut that may have a difficult time travelling, let's from Trumbull to Greenwich.

The research study also found that specific specialties, such as oncology, are more likely to use video to communicate directly with patients.

Counter Indications
While this sounds like a great improvement the research also found that concerns over reimbursement, liability and HIPAA are still major barriers to communicating online with patients.
